Company: BRAVE Creative Leadership

I'm not one to blow my own trumpet but would love the opportunity to represent Derby & Mainframe as digital ambassador. I and my colleagues have had a great 2019 starting CreativeMornings/Derby a global creative lecture series for Derby's creative community.

I am an active part of Derby's creative community, not just for commercial reasons but because I have a real passion for the future creativity, creative leadership and creative businesses will have on our local economy and profile.

Looking into 2020 I'm looking to bring creative skills academy's and more great events and community action to the city.

John Whall

Company: QUAD

John creates projects that use digital methods to encourage participation in the arts. John is incredibly passionate about this subject; he attends conferences around the world, shares his learning with colleagues, and sincerely cares about positively engaging people who may not usually engage in the arts using innovative and exciting digital tools, such as VR and Mine Craft.

The number of people in Derbyshire and afar that John has shared this with would be in the hundreds, possibly thousands; he speaks at conferences, creates partnerships and leads weekly sessions at QUAD

Through his role at QUAD John develops the delivery of QUAD’s participatory and creative wellbeing programmes, engaging participants in arts and contemporary culture through digital media. He leads the Digital Participation Expedition with the East Midlands Participatory Arts Forum (EMPAF) and is Digital Champion for the ArtWorks Alliance (AWA), exploring what we mean by “digital participation” in arts and culture. He is a recent alumnus to the Extend Leadership Programme (2018/19 cohort) and joined the Engage Council as East Midlands Representative in 2019.

He is passionate about leading authentic participation, which enables a participant first approach to working with and within the medium of digital.

In 2015 I graduated from Derby University with 5 friends and we decided to start making video games in Derby. In 5 years we've gone from just 5 graduates in a small office on Brook Street to a massive newly renovated office with 65 employees. We've also managed to work hard to retain our intellectual property and not sell it to publishers for a quick cash in. This decision allowed us to remain in control of our destiny and grow the business locally.

We have never engaged with the city until now, we're desperate to make Derby and Derbyshire a real hub for video games. Along the way in our journey I have won a place on The Forbes 30 Under 30 List (2017) as well as numerous video games industry specific awards.

In 2018 we attracted a 20% investment from the second biggest games publisher in the world 'Square Enix' after being valued at over £10m. Since their investment we have switched our focus onto company culture and making sure our team and staff are really happy working for us, that way we think we get the best people and the best out of them! Our commitment to our team can be seen in our benefits:

"Private Medical Insurance
All employees and their families qualify for a great private medical package.
Private Dental Insurance
All employees receive dental cover as part of their medical insurance.
Flexible Working Hours
We offer you freedom to allow work to fit in with your schedule and preferences.
Profit Share Scheme
You make the games so we share the profits! 10% of the project's profits are shared with those who are part of it!
Annual Holiday Increase & St George's Day
For every year you work with us, you gain an extra day of holiday! In addition to all public holidays, we even close for St George's day allowing you to enjoy England in the Spring.
Free drinks
The fridges are constantly stocked high with refreshing drinks and we provide unlimited tea and coffee - help yourself!
High End Hardware and Three Monitors
We want our team to be comfortable at work. Every developer has three monitors and a high end PC.
Games and Pizza Nights
Whether board games or video games, join us for free pizza, drinks and fun!
Discounted Gym Membership
As part of your medical insurance, you receive a 20% discount at Nuffield Health gyms. Luckily there is one next to the office! New year, new you!"

Since founding the company we have released 3 games and have began to compete with massive household gaming names, travelling all over the world showing our games to players. Our games have released on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nitendo as well as Virtual Reality.

Our gamble of going it alone after university has paid off in a big way. We want the city and county to benefit in our business success as begin a new chapter in looking at how we can support the growth of the region we're incredibly proud to call home.
